The majority of the town is\r\nlocated on relatively high ground on the southern side of the River, with little or no\r\nrisk of flooding. Other parts of the town, especially to the north of the River and rural\r\nland upstream and downstream of the town, are located on lower lying land that is at\r\nrisk of flooding. A number of floods have occurred in the past, with the largest floods\r\nrecorded in 1955, 1956 and 1969. Lawsons Creek and Redbank Creek also\r\ncontribute to flooding problems experienced within the area.\r\n\r\nA flood study was recently completed for Mudgee [Department of Land and Water\r\nConservation, 1998]. A computer model was developed as part of the flood study,\r\nwhich provided information on existing flood levels and velocities for the Cudgegong\r\nRiver and Lawsons Creek under a range of flood events.\r\n\r\nThe current floodplain management study investigates what can be done to minimise\r\nthe effects of flooding. Specific objectives of the study include:\r\n\r\n* a review of the existing flood study model and results;\r\n* additional flood modelling for Redbank Creek;\r\n* quantification of the flood problem in Mudgee and rural surrounds;\r\n* an assessment of potential floodplain management measures to reduce the risks\r\nof flooding; and\r\n* the development of a recommended floodplain management plan for the Mudgee\r\narea outlining the best measures to reduce flood damage, based on\r\nconsideration of environmental, social, economic and engineering issues.", "num_resources": 1, "num_tags": 4, "organization": {"id": "9ef25431-312b-40f7-9d8f-c956352a3d6c", "name": "mid-western-regional-council", "title": "Mid-Western Regional Council", "type": "organization", "description": "The Mid-Western Regional Council is a local government area in the Central West region of New South Wales.
