This dataset captures the language background of New Arrival students in NSW government schools.  \r\n\r\n**Data Notes.**\r\n\r\n* From 2016 new arrivals data was collected through English as an Additional Language/Dialect (EAL/D) annual census conducted in June. As data is collected mid-year, whole year data is not available until June the following year. \r\n\r\n* New arrivals are defined as students who are enrolling in an Australian school for the first time, within 6 months of arriving in Australia (18 months for Kindergarten), speak a language other than English as their first language, and need intensive E/ALD instruction.\r\n\r\n* Languages spoken by \u2018new arrival\u2019 students are counted on a different basis from LBOTE. New Arrival students are counted based on the main languages spoken by the students themselves, while the LBOTE category includes students who speak another language and those with a parent/carer who speaks another language.
