The present study updates the classification and mapping of 30 communities, with the updated mapping provided in digital form for inclusion in the council's GIS. The survey area included all of the Hornsby LGA, from Eastwood to Brooklyn to Wisemans Ferry, excluding Marramarra NP, Muogamarra NR, Long Island NR, and Ku-ring-gai Chase NP east of the Sydney-Newcastle Freeway.\r\n\r\nIn the initial study, the classification of the plant communities was based on the floristic composition of the tallest vegetation layer (usually the tree species composition). The assessment was subjective but based on species data from a total of 404 sample sites. An additional 209 sites were examined for the updated study. The classification has been refined to include 8 EECs, two rainforest communities (instead of one in the original classification), and recognition of the distinctive vegetation of Dangar Island as a separate community.
