The NSW Government has made available datasets for COVID-19 cases and tests in NSW. Follow the links below for information on the COVID-19 data program and to access the datasets:
Information for the NSW Government COVID-19 data program including outcomes, publicly accessible data and data protection practices.
The COVID-19 cases datasets provide data for the notification date, location, age range and likely source of infection of known cases. The datasets are updated daily, except on weekends.
Update: The COVID-19 cases datasets now contain cases that have been identified through registered positive rapid antigen test (RAT) results. A new field has been added to the dataset "confirmed_by_pcr". Records showing a "Yes" in this field are cases that have been confirmed by a PCR test only or a registered positive RAT result that has also been confirmed by a PCR test. Records showing a "No" are registered positive RAT results that have not been confirmed by PCR test.
The COVID-19 cases datasets have been aggregated to reduce file size to make it easier for our open data users. (9 February 2022)
Update: NSW Health will no longer provide a breakdown of locally acquired and overseas acquired COVID-19 cases in its daily updates, but a total of all cases. With quarantine-free international travel, overseas origin of cases can no longer be determined immediately, but will be included in the COVID-19 weekly surveillance reports. (19 November 2021)
Update: NSW Health has changed the way it reports active cases. Cases are reported as active for 14 days from the onset of symptoms. This change means a significant number of older cases have been removed from the total, which now more accurately represents the number of active cases in the community. Cases who have been hospitalised are considered active until they are discharged. (17 September 2021)
Update: COVID-19 cases by age group are available for cases notified from 29 June 2021 onwards. (03 August 2021)
The COVID-19 tests datasets provide data for the test result, location and age range. The datasets are updated daily, except on weekends.
Update: NSW Health implemented a change in the way testing data is reported. All tests regardless of prior COVID-19 diagnosis are reported. This is in line with the way other jurisdictions report COVID-19 testing across Australia. (17 September 2021)
Update: The COVID-19 tests datasets do not include registered positive rapid antigen test (RAT) results. (13 January 2022)
This dataset provides data on COVID-19 testing and assessment clinics by geolocation, address, contact details, services provided and opening hours. The data is updated daily, except on weekends.
This dataset provides COVID-19 case locations by date of known outbreak, location, address and action. This dataset includes transmission venues of concern. The data is updated daily, except on weekends.
Update: New dataset – NSW COVID-19 public transport routes. (14 January 2021)
We have published a new dataset on confirmed cases on public transport routes.
Update: In metropolitan Sydney, contact tracing now focuses on people potentially exposed to a case in their household, at work, or in a high-risk facility. (17 August 2021)
Update: From Monday 15 November 2021, NSW Health will no longer list case locations that a COVID-19 positive person has attended. This is due to a number of reasons, including high vaccination rates in the community. If you are told to self-isolate by NSW Health or get tested for COVID-19 at any time you must follow this advice. (15 November 2021)
This dataset provides data on COVID-19 cases on public transport routes. The data is updated when new cases are announced. Cases will be removed after 14 days.
This dataset provides data on flights associated with confirmed cases of COVID-19. The data is updated when new flights are announced by NSW Health.

COVID Safe businesses and organisations
Update: The COVID Safe Businesses and Organisations dataset has been discontinued. We have identified issues with the integrity of the data with the recent increase in volume of registrations. We apologise for any inconvenience. (12 October 2021)
Update: Tests Dataset.
From 11 June, the COVID-19 tests datasets were updated to align with the new reporting methodology used by NSW Health. The new datasets are based on the number of tests notified instead of the number of people tested.
The COVID-19 tests datasets that were published prior to 11 June existing COVID-19 tests datasets are no longer being updated. However, they remain available and can be found here.
The two new datasets now align with the change in reporting methodology. These datasets are the NSW COVID-19 tests by age range and NSW COVID-19 tests by location. The updated methodology is applied to all historical COVID-19 tests data. Refer to how NSW counts tests for more information.
Update: Case Locations Dataset. (24 September 2020)
We have replaced the previous COVID-19 case locations dataset to make it easier to re-use. However, the historical data will remain available.
Update: "Likely source of infection" categories update. (20 November 2020)
NSW Health updated the “likely source of infection” categories for locally acquired cases from 19 November 2020, in order to align with Commonwealth reporting requirements. These changes are reflected in the NSW COVID-19 cases by location and likely source of infection dataset and the NSW COVID-19 cases by likely source of infection dataset.
Previous categories for locally acquired cases
- Locally acquired - contact of a confirmed case and/or in a known cluster
- Locally acquired - source not identified
New categories for locally acquired cases (from 19 November onwards)
- Locally acquired - linked to known case or cluster
- Locally acquired - no links to known case or cluster
- Locally acquired - investigation ongoing
There is no change to the other categories – “overseas”, “interstate” and “under investigation”.
