About us

The NSW Data Analytics Centre is leading all-of-government data analytics to improve outcomes for citizens of NSW.

The NSW Data Analytics Centre (DAC) helps the NSW Government use data to make better informed decisions and improve public services. Through turning data into insights, the DAC provides capability to strengthen data-driven decision making. These actionable insights further support government priorities such as housing, health, education, cost of living, and safety.

Established in 2015, the DAC was the first government data analytics agency in Australia. Created to improve data is used across the NSW public sector to support better outcomes for the community.

Our services and products

The DAC provides core data services to all NSW Government agencies addressing gaps in data management, analytics and reform alignment. For larger agencies, the DAC offers specialised expertise and advanced tools that complement existing capabilities.

Data science and insights

The DAC uses advanced data techniques, including machine learning and automation, to deliver faster and more cost-effective analysis. These insights support policy development, service design, and operational improvements.

Examples of work include:

  • NSW Legislation Twin
  • Helping NSW Health better understand patient behavior to reduce unnecessary emergency department visits
  • Supporting the Department of Education to analyse how parents engage with early childhood services, improving access
  • Assisting the NSW Rental Commissioner to identify risks like illegal rent bidding, contributing to a fairer rental market.
Data platforms and tools

The DAC builds secure, shared platforms that allow agencies to access, analyse and visualise data. These include:

  • The NSW Insights Hub
  • The Advanced Spatial Analytics Lab
  • The Journey Lab
  • The NSW Data Cloud

The design of these platforms, all for reuse across agencies, reduces duplication and improves value.

Data policy, governance and evaluation

The DAC contributes to major reform efforts through supporting coordinated and data-informed approaches across the government, including development of policies, standards and tools.

These include:

  • Leading NSW involvement in national initiatives such as the National Disability Data Asset
  • Supporting whole of government strategies such as Closing the Gap
  • Contributing to development of the NSW Data Strategy
  • Managing open data via the Data.NSW Open Data Portal
  • Advising on legal, ethical and privacy
  • Providing training and guidance to build capability across the sector.

This work strengthens policy development, improves service delivery, and supports state and national priorities.
