Estuary Catchment Population 1996-2006

Population in estuary catchments were estimated using statistics from census data obtained from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS). This data was sourced from CData 1996, CData2001 and the 2006 Basic Community Profile (BCP). Non-populated areas were removed from each census Collection District (CD) - this included National Parks (LPMA 2008), State Forests (LPMA 2005) and Waterbodies (LPMA 2006). Where a CD intersected with the boundary of an estuary drainage basin catchment, the proportion of population either side of the boundary was approximated according to the percentage of the CD area falling inside and outside the catchment. These populations were used to create a catchment density (persons per square kilometre).
