The Department of Planning, Industry and Environment has established the Biodiversity Indicator Program to assess the status of biodiversity in New South Wales. This work was a partnership between the Department staff and CSIRO, the Australian Museum and Macquarie University.

We have developed a suite of indicators to measure different aspects of biodiversity and ecological integrity (the capacity of ecosystems to retain biodiversity and adapt to change). The method used to develop the indicators has been peer-reviewed and is available in a technical report (Measuring biodiversity and ecological integrity in NSW: Method for the Biodiversity Indicator Program).

Results of the first assessment of the status of NSW biodiversity and ecological integrity are available in the NSW Biodiversity Outlook Report: Results from the Biodiversity Indicator Program: First assessment that presents results on the status and trends of biodiversity and ecological integrity at regional and statewide scales. Assessments will continue at recommended intervals, including supplemental reports and contributing to the five-year review of the Biodiversity Conservation Act 2016.

Each of the report cards in the NSW Biodiversity Outlook Report is supported by an implementation report. These peer-reviewed reports provide technical detail on exactly how indicators were calculated, allowing anyone with technical expertise to reproduce the indicators. For each implementation report, there is also a data package, which provides core data and computer code supporting the indicators
