Providing reliable, consistent data on digital connectivity across NSW
Before the development of the Connectivity Index, government agencies and communities did not have reliable, consistent data on digital connectivity across NSW. This gap meant government was limited in making well-informed decisions on connectivity investment, prioritising critical needs, and shaping policies with efficiency and collaboration.
Existing information only identified connectivity at broad, statewide or national levels. NSWTA’s Connectivity Index offers more granular data, enabling agencies to precisely target digital connectivity initiatives.
The Connectivity Index is a visualisation tool that measures the quality of digital connectivity across NSW through three key elements: access, affordability and demographics.
Drawing from over 400 million data points which show 4G/5G coverage, fixed network coverage and performance, internet and calling plan prices, and demographic factors such as education levels and skills, the Connectivity Index transforms complex information into a simple, interactive tool that is accessible to the public, while also providing a more detailed version for NSW government agencies.
Achievements
Launched in December 2023, the Connectivity Index has already attracted over 300,000 views for statewide connectivity insights, supporting digital inclusion and regional programs aimed at enhancing digital connectivity.
The tool has drawn strong interest across the industry as an effective resource for guiding efforts to improve digital connectivity. A government agency version is actively used by agencies such as DCS and Transport for NSW (TFNSW) to support their connectivity programs.
