A real time state-wide data repository that supports whole-of-health system operational management
NSW Health data is collected and managed in a wide range of specialised systems, such as bookings, clinical and finance systems. This fragmentation creates challenges in accessing and linking relevant information in real-time to help NSW Health staff better coordinate hospital operations such as patient flows across its 228 hospitals in a single holistic view. The solution to this is a real-time operational platform powered by the State Operational Data Store (ODS), that integrates data from enterprise systems across the NSW Health at the ward, hospital and local health district levels, supporting applications used by over 25,000 staff. This helps to ensure patients have access to the right care, at the right time, and in the right place, with minimum waiting times.
Achievements
The benefits of the NSW Health State Operational Data Store include:
✔ Better visibility of the patient journey, bed management and allocations and patient transfers
✔ Support demand and capacity planning from a state, LHD and facility level
✔ Enhance efficiency across departments to better coordinate care and patient flow e.g. Reduction in phone calls between Teams
✔ Support Public Health Rapid Surveillance – including pandemic response
✔ Providing tools that assist to minimise revenue leakage
✔ Providing tools that remove the need for paper
As a result of this facilitated (per month):
- 8,800 inter hospital transfers
- 25,200 Non-emergency transport bookings
- 35,000 waiting for what delays and their impact on bed days
