Preschool and early intervention classes in NSW government schools

This dataset provides a list of both government preschools and early intervention classes across NSW in 2017. Data is valid as at August 2019.

Data notes:

  • There are currently 100 government preschools across NSW, with 61 in the Sydney metropolitan area and another 39 preschools in regional and/or rural NSW.

  • Government preschool classes are an integral part of the school in which they are located and operate within the same hours as the school. Schools offer a range of part-time attendance patterns to meet the needs of the local community and to ensure that families are offered at least 600 hours of preschool education over the year which equates to approximately 15 hours per week.

  • Children aged 3 to 6 years may be enrolled in a preschool program. Children generally attend government preschools for one year only, in the year before they start school. In exceptional circumstances, the principal may consider an additional year of attendance.

  • There are 47 early intervention classes located in NSW public schools and operate during school terms. Children usually attend for 2.5 hour sessions, two to three days a week. Class sizes range from five to eight children and children are aged between three and six years.
