High Ecological Value Waterways and Water Dependent Ecosystems - SOUTH COAST Catchments of NSW

Department of Planning, Industry and Environment

This dataset identifies high ecological value waterways and water dependent ecosystems for the South Coast of NSW, covering 89 coastal catchments. The purpose of the dataset is to identify strategic priorities for protecting and improving the health of high value waterways and water dependent ecosystems in the catchment.

The map shows areas where waterways and water dependent ecosystems are defined as high ecological value, based on the definitions, guidelines and policies under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999, Biodiversity Conservation Act 2016, Fisheries Management Act 1994 and/or Water Management Act 2000.

The water dependent ecosystems consist of wetlands, and flora and fauna that rely on water sources (including groundwater). The dataset does not include vegetation communities dependent on surface waters. The dataset integrates 28 data layers/indicators being used by the State Government to define high value and 22 indicators are present in this region (see Attachment 1: Datasets describing high value waterways and water dependent ecosystems in the South Coast, NSW). The individual indicators have not been ground-truthed and it is recommended that field assessments and/or a comparison to local mapping be undertaken prior to any decisions being made.

The dataset was created by initially placing a 1 hectare hexagon grid over the catchment, and attributing the grid with the area, length and/or frequency of occurrence of high value water dependent ecosystems.
