Narrandera Shire Council

Narrandera Local Government Area lies within the Riverina region of south-west New South Wales. With a population of over 5,800 people, the Shire covers an area of 4118 square kilometres, which includes Narrandera township, the rural villages of Barellan, Grong Grong, Binya as well as fifteen other rural localities.

The Narrandera township is located on the Murrumbidgee River, at the junction of the Newell and Sturt Highways, and within a diversely productive agricultural region. The Murrumbidgee River, a major tributary of the Murray River system, intersects the shire. Historically the most significant flood events occurred in 1891, 1956 and 1974, with more recent major flood events in 2010, 2012 and 2016.

Main Canal, carrying water to the Murrumbidgee Irrigation Area to Narrandera's west, flows between Narrandera township and Murrumbidgee River. Narrandera Wetland, located between the canal and river, is a collection point for storm water run-off from the town.

Narrandera Shire Council is responsible for local land use planning within its Local Government Area including land on the floodplains of the drainage catchments and the Murrumbidgee River. The NSW State Government’s Flood Prone Land Policy provides a framework to ensure sustainable use of floodplain environments. Under the Policy, the management of flood liable land remains the responsibility of local government. The NSW Government’s Floodplain Development Manual: the Management of Flood Liable Land (April 2005) provides guidance to support the policy. The manual details actions required to assist Councils to meet their obligations to plan and manage flood prone land in accordance with its flood exposure. Undertaking flood studies and developing flood risk management plans for these areas is an important part of this process.
