Enabling mobility digital solutions and evidence based mobility related decisions
Transport for NSW identified the need to provide trusted, easily accessible data as to enabler innovative mobility related digital solutions & services for the people of NSW. The Open Data Hub also aims to address the challenge of accessing and using quality, easy to understand data to support actionable insights and evidence-based NSW mobility related decisions.
Transport’s Open Data Hub was created, providing:
- seamless integration of multiple technical components to create a scalable and rich data, insights and interactive maps sharing capability.
- interface standardisation for both data collection /acquisition and data release / publication, standardised documentation.
- data and insights lifecycle standardisation with embedded clear governance. Authorised consumers / partners embedded in the pilot and UAT processes.
- clear channels of communication, collaboration and continuous input/feedback for the public, data & insights consumers and partners.
- defined, end to end operational processes connecting data collectors, processers, publishers and consumers (e.g.Transport operators, Transport teams, councils, other government organisations, third parties partners, consumers).
- defined path for trialling innovative ways of using data or innovative data driven digital solutions with clear benefits for NSW people /communities.
Achievements
Transport Open Data Hub has become a trusted, feature rich, user friendly, public mobility data and insights sharing platform. The Open Data Hub:
- is easy to access, navigate and understand, with standardised & documented interfaces, with clear channels for public communications & interactions, collaborations / partnerships
- enables release of data value and data driven outcomes for the people of NSW through a multitude of mechanisms: feeds of real-time and static data into Government owned or third party owned digital apps, interactive maps, interactive actionable insights, data driven innovative digital solutions trials / innovation challenges, data exchanges, data products collaborations & partnerships
- provides detailed analytics and data trends such as public transport patronage provide insights for organisations such as councils, planning departments and academic researchers
- provides customers with access the latest information on Buses, Trains, Light Rail, Metro, and Ferries, servicing millions customers monthly. Through travel apps, customers can see stop locations, timetables, find out how each trip is tracking against schedule, and the real-time GPS position of vehicles, Transport vehicle occupancy, availability of parking spots, speed zones, rest areas on the roads and their facilities, bicycle path network and some associated facilities, boating weather alerts, and taxi ranking estimated waiting times.

Transport has partnered with a wide range of business and technical SMEs across TfNSW divisions (Park&Ride, Transport.info), cross NSW government organisations (for example, Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water, Bureau of Meteorology, councils) and third parties (for example, transport operators, NRMA, Google, Tripview , Anytrip, NextThere, LiveTraffic, Bike Party, Tern Commute, Virtuous Cycle, Park’n Pay, CamperMate, Gourmakers)
