Using open data to drive innovation for start ups
Spatial data is widely used for property valuation, site selection, and urban planning purposes. By utilising this data, property developers can identify prime locations for investment and development. Everyday Australians also use this information to gain critical insights before entering the property market.
DCS Spatial Services provides authoritative spatial information for NSW as open data. This data is widely used by the private sector to develop online solutions targeted at real estate and property management applications. Freely available open data allows these businesses to cost effectively meet this market need. This ensures the residents of NSW have the most up to date authoritative information to make, what to many is, one of their most important life-time investments.
Open access to spatial data has meant that property technology companies, such as Archistar, have been able to leverage open spatial information and cutting-edge AI and 3D design technology. Their solutions empower industry and businesses to tackle the challenges of housing supply, affordability and equity and assist government to accelerate building permit approvals which boosts building supply and fosters growth in urban areas.
Companies, such as MapAI, have been able to access open spatial information to support the delivery of business insights. MapAI works with partners to securely access open spatial information and location-based technologies to help them explore their business data which enables them to gather further insights into their customers and users. Without access to secure open spatial information for NSW, the rich information that can be gained from business data is limited and the ability to make better decisions about services is compromised.
Achievements
Making Government information available as open data supports business growth and improvements in everyday life. It lowers the barrier to entry that has traditionally been experienced by business start-ups and supports the development of innovative and thriving businesses in NSW. Without this information, businesses such as MapAI and Archistar might not be able to provide the innovative solutions that support business and industry decision making, which creates better outcomes for the community.
Engagement
This project has involved partnership and engagement with community, government and industry.
