Improving platforms and systems

The Foundation Spatial Data Framework (FSDF) is a structured, standardised system for organising, managing and sharing spatial data. It ensures commonly used spatial information is captured, stored, and disseminated in a way that guarantees:

  • quality, through comprehensive quality assurance routines
  • consistency, through the adoption of common datums, projections and geodetic measurements
  • interoperability, by maintaining stable topology between delivered data themes
  • reuse, through the adoption of open data standards and access arrangements.

By using the FSDF, NSW Spatial data users need not worry about the underlying complexity of aligning multiple disparate datasets. The framework provides a range of common datasets which are freely available through a variety of automated delivery channels. These datasets can be used as a foundational base to build targeted spatial solutions.

The FSDF is used as the backbone for the Land iQ spatial data library. Land iQ is a world-first data platform that helps NSW Government agencies make faster, smarter decisions about the use of land. It is a spatially enabled whole-of-government tool for strategically evaluating land use. Land iQ improves land-use decisions and has helped government agencies respond to floods, as well as housing supply and affordability. The FSDF enables a consistent topology for the inclusion of over one hundred different spatial datasets from a range of data custodians.

Achievements

Land iQ brings multiple land use data types into one single platform, making it easy to search more than 8 million property lots to test the impact of different land use scenarios. The tool is already being used to support the delivery of temporary housing in Northern NSW as part of the government’s flood response.
