The NSW Data Strategy is about using and sharing data for the benefit of people, businesses and communities. To do this, data must help the NSW Government deliver on its priorities.
The NSW Government priorities are:
- Building better homes for NSW
- Building essential services that people rely on
- Building better communities for NSW
Data is the cornerstone of good decisions. Delivering the right data to the right people at the right time sets the foundation for decision-makers to improve outcomes and make NSW a great place to live.
Building better homes for NSW
We are building better homes for NSW close to essential infrastructure and jobs, where people want to live, to ensure we continue to address the housing crisis for renters and people wanting to enter the housing market. Everyone in NSW needs a place to call home.
This outcome is reflected in the following:
3B: The NSW Government surveyed the community on improving housing and homelessness support and received an unprecedented 5,000 responses. The NSW Government quickly draw insights from responses using AI modelling, which informed areas that should be prioritised, maintained or changed.
2B: Land iQ is a world-first data platform and whole of government tool that helps NSW Government agencies make faster, smarter decisions about the use of land. It has helped government agencies respond to floods, housing supply and affordability.
2B: Cadastre NSW gives access to near real-time mapping of property development across NSW, improving efficiency in capturing property data for new subdivision and strata scheme developments.
4A: The Foundation Spatial Data Framework supports Government planning decisions by ensuring that commonly used spatial information is captured, stored, and disseminated in a way that guarantees quality, consistency, interoperability, and usability.
- 8 Embed a cross-sector interconnected data system to inform government priorities
- 3 Embed the Foundation Spatial Data Framework
- 20 Evaluate the appropriateness of the spatial data governance framework for use in other domains
Building essential services that people rely on
We are ensuring we have the essential services like education and healthcare that the people of NSW rely on, that pays our essential workers fairly, that keeps our communities safe and supports local jobs. This includes paying fair wages to our frontline staff (i.e. teachers, nurses, paramedics, police force and other essential workers).
We are sustainably rebuilding essential services that care for our community such as increasing protection for victim-survivors of domestic and family violence and building accessible and affordable transport options.
This outcome is reflected in the following:
3B: NSW school students can safely explore the benefits of generative AI through . Students and staff in NSW can engage with AI confidently knowing the tool is purpose-built to support teaching and learning.
1A: Transport for NSW collaborates with developers on trip planning tools like Google Maps and TripView. Real-time data is made available through an open data platform which handles over 100 million requests each week.
1B: The NSW Government is participating in the design and ongoing use of the which will be used to provide a more complete picture of the programs and services that people with disability use, to better support people with disability, their families, and carers.
2A: The Human Services Data Set – the largest human services linked data asset in the NSW Government – is used to help government agencies understand and predict future demand for services, make evidence-based investment decisions, and develop coordinated cross-agency interventions that improve outcomes for vulnerable children and families.
- 6 NSW delivers on its commitments to national data reform initiatives
- 7 Develop a coordination model for NSW and national linked data assets
- 10 Explore privacy enhancing technologies that make data sharing safer
- 15 The NSW AI strategy sets the direction for data management practices that support safe and ethical use of AI
Building better communities for NSW
We are building and upgrading the roads, schools, hospitals, transport infrastructure, energy systems and housing we need to improve the lives of people in NSW. This means supporting community mental health and wellbeing.
We are focused on enhancing emergency response and disaster support and recovery while rebuilding an energy system into one that is affordable, clean and reliable for everyone.
This outcome is reflected in the following:
1A: NSW is improving the way we manage emergencies, such as natural disasters or terrorism, using the Emergency Management Portal. The portal provides spatial and other related data to support a coordinated and connected response to multi-agency emergencies – making us all safer.
2A: The NSW Child Development Study (NSW-CDS) is a long-term, data linkage study following a cohort of over 91,000 children in NSW from birth to adulthood. In a partnership with universities, it generates insights into the development of mental disorders across the life-course, with consideration of intersecting mental health, justice, education, and physical health problems.
3A: NSW Transport is improving road safety through its Mobile Phone Detection Camera program. The program uses Artificial Intelligence (AI) software to detect and review cases of illegal mobile phone use while driving, with several stages of human review and strict security and privacy protocols. Camera-detected mobile phone offences have significantly decreased since their introduction.
